![]() ![]() Though Ragnarok is technically the fifth mainline title in the series, there are actually seven games in total for those wanting to enjoy the full breadth of the Spartan's trials and tribulations. While no further information has been provided for the new God of Wargame, there are likely many players that would be interested in catching up on the journey of Kratos in the lead up to this title. I just don't think it deserved the acclaim it got.In September of 2020, PlayStation fans were likely shocked and thrilled as Sony Santa Monica Studios announced that the next game in the classic God of War franchise would be coming in 2021. The studio ran a small teaser trailer showing the well-known omega logo with the phrase "Ragnarok is Coming" as the final announcement in the PS5 Showcase Event, giving players a compelling reason to purchase the new console. ![]() Neat environments, cool interpretation of some parts of greek mythology, all that stuff. If you're playing it for the first time, it's a 10 or so hour ride that's mostly fine. That said, as a game, it's not like.offensively bad or anything. It'd be very easy to argue that, until GoW2018, they have just been making better GoW2005. Everything the other games would do, it's the first that introduced the concept and they have been iterating on it. The only thing GoW1 can truly claim is that it is the origin point. Paired with the extremely simplistic combat with one weapon few enemies and not much more, I got bored of it very quickly and just wanted it to end at less than the halfway point. It's a very "show, don't tell" problem where the narrator is the one that tells us everything Kratos is thinking and feeling because otherwise he'd just be a blank slate. And the CGI acting is awful, because not only does Kratos have the same stupid expression the entire game no matter what emotion he's trying to convey, anything that's happening visually is then also explained by the narrator. It's the sort of story that only works if you don't know the spoilers, because most of it is about building for the reveal of why Kratos hates Ares and it's just not structured to be enriching if you already know that. In fact, atleast like half the story is him walking around and being reminded of something that the game then goes into flashback mode to explain. The storytelling is arguably its most unique feature in how it's mostly narrated by gaia, but that's not actually a good thing because Kratos is a very passive figure in the story. Not all of it is awful, but none of it is as good as later entries would make. The combat is at it's worst and most basic, few enemies, the qte's are outdated, it's environments pale in comparison to what we'd see in future games, etc. Having replayed the other games, everything GoW1 does has since been done better. But I was one of the few people who didn't think it was that great on release either. Having played through the entire main trilogy and now going through the side games, I can say the answer is mostly no. It sits very comfortably high up in the ranking of the series for me, the sequels got prettier and more bombastic, but there were lower lows. A modicum of patience is all that is needed and it was over pretty quick for me. That said, some argue a certain 'pillar' sequence is problematic but I really didn't find it too bad on revisit at all. I was really surprised how well that large Zelda-esque dungeon held up. I was -very- unimpressed with how well the sequel games held up in story and motivations(bordering on actively disliking), but the first game at least had a decent foundation.Ĭombat is a bit simplistic next to what comes later, but still effective despite its limitations, you will utilize all your equipment during progression and enjoy upgrades.Īlso, Pandora's Temple in the back half of the game may be the most intricate and impressive section of the PS2/PS3 lot of games. ![]() Played through/revisited all the games before GoW 2018 launched, and of ALL the older games I felt the original held up best in terms of characterization and story. ![]()
