The kingpin inclination also contributes to the scrub radius of the steered wheel, the distance between the centre of the tyre contact patch and where the kingpin axis intersects the ground. Thus, the weight of the vehicle tends to rotate the wheel about the kingpin back to this position. The kingpin angle has an important effect on steering, making it tend to return to the straight ahead or centre position because the straight ahead position is where the suspended body of the vehicle is at its lowest point. On most modern designs, the kingpin angle is set relative to the vertical, as viewed from the front or back of the vehicle, and it is not adjustable, changing only if the wheel spindle or steering knuckles are bent. ![]() Virtual or physical, the kingpin angle may also be referred to by its acronym KPA, kingpin inclination (KPI), or steering axis inclination (SAI), and remains a fundamental vehicle design parameter. This virtual kingpin is inclined toward the centerline of the vehicle at an angle called the kingpin angle. While no current-era automobile front suspension incorporates a physical kingpin, the axis defined by the steering knuckle pivot points acts a "virtual kingpin" about which the wheel turns. Although the kingpin was no longer an identifiable physical component, suspension geometry was still designed in terms of a virtual kingpin along a line between the ball joint centres. In the 1950s and 1960s, such independent suspension became commonplace through light cars in all price ranges. The hub carrier extended vertically to span the ends of both wishbones, with a ball joint at each end. Rather than using separate pivots for both the up-and-down motion of the suspension and the steering swivel, the use of a spherical ball joint that could move in two degrees of freedom allowed the same joint to carry out both functions. ![]() This performance also encouraged the reduction of unsprung weight. Independent front suspension developed through the 1930s, for high-performance cars at least, often using double wishbone suspension. Kingpins were always clamped in the centre and the swivel bearings at the ends, to increase the lever arm and so reduce the bearing load. Most commonly the centre of the kingpin was fixed in the axle and the hub carrier was forked to fit over this, but some vehicles, including the Ford Model T illustrated, used a forked axle and a kingpin fixed into a single piece carrier. The kingpins were now fixed to the axle ends and the hub carriers pivoted upon them. Ackermann steering has the two advantages that it reduces tyre scrub, the need to drag tyres sideways across their tread when turning the steering, and also it reduced bump steer, suspension and road bumps tending to upset the steering direction. The beam axle between them remains fixed relative to the chassis, linked by the suspension. ![]() Some early cars also used centre pivot steering, although it became apparent that it was unsuitable for their increasing speeds.Īckermann steering separates the steering movement into two pivots, one near the hub of each front wheel. Similar centre pivot steering was used by steam traction engines, the kingpin being mounted on the 'perch bracket' beneath the boiler. This located the axle from side to side, but the weight of the wagon was carried on a circular wooden ring turntable surrounding this. Originally, with the 'turntable' steering of horse-drawn wagons, this was a single pin on which the moveable axle was pivoted beneath the wagon's frame. ![]() ![]() ![]() Set in Los Angeles, in 2002 and again in 2015, this putative thriller, directed and written by Billy Ray (whose other credit this week is the screenplay for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2), turns on the rape and murder of a young woman. Dour, drab and lacking the powerful subtext of its Argentine model, it comes across as little more than a police procedural of the sort you can find any night on the tube.A flashbacking film noir adapted from 2010's foreign-language Oscar winner, Secret in Their Eyes is notable for its top-tier cast - Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the leads - and for its utter lack of credulity and good sense. If this movie had been as good a piece of pulp as “Primal Fear,” it might have done for him what that equally lurid flick did for Edward Norton.īut “Secret in Their Eyes” is nowhere near as enjoyable as that Richard Gere potboiler was. The real eye-catcher among the secondary cast is Cole, who not only differentiates nicely between the aspects of his double role but manages a real sense of menace. Among the supporting players, Molina offers standard-issue bluster and Kelly equally familiar obtuseness, but Norris brings a touch of welcome geniality to the proceedings as the goofy sidekick, even if the part isn’t as saucily written as it was in the original. She actually does some real acting as the stricken Jess, and frankly the effort is more than the material deserves. Roberts, by contrast, abandons every vestige of glamour as a woman robbed of his reason for living. Kidman is silkily beautiful as Claire, for all the supposed passage of years looking as gorgeous in the chronologically later scenes as she does in the supposedly earlier ones. Ejiofor gets top billing, and rightfully so but though he brings all his intensity and charisma to the role, Kasten remains a basically stock character-the guy determined to right a wrong from long ago. Nevertheless it has to be admitted that the picture is well mounted, boasting a first-rate cast. And one might add that the script totally excises the explanation for the title, which in this version is utterly meaningless. The rationale that Ray has devised to preserve the original’s big set-piece-the soccer stadium chase, which is here switched to Dodgers’ Stadium-is also rather lame. ![]() But apart from that, Ray’s transformation of a grieving husband unconnected to the investigators into a colleague tormented by the death of a daughter has an aura of coincidence that cheapens the scenario. Quite frankly the replacement of Argentina’s “dirty war,” in which thousands of people were “disappeared” by a military junta, with American xenophobia in the early twenty-first century is more than a stretch indeed it’s rather tasteless. ![]() Now, after thirteen years of searching, Kasten has identified him as an ex-con named Beckwith (also played by Cole), and enlists Bumpy and Claire, now the D.A., to capture him and finally bring an end to Jess’ grief at knowing her daughter’s murderer remains at large. detective, Reg Siefert (Michael Kelly), reporting on the interior workings of a local mosque, and Morales refuses to prosecute such an important source, so the man vanishes unpunished. The killing, occurring in the aftermath of 9/11, sends Jess’ colleague Ray Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor), an FBI man assigned to the office of L.A. In his version, the murdered woman is Carolyn (Zoe Graham), the vivacious young daughter of L.A. Writer-director Ray has struggled to come up with a plausible U.S.-set scenario that might approximate the Argentine one. Now the duo gradually ferret out the truth of the matter, which involves the husband of the murder victim. They had identified the killer, but he was part of the repressive government that ruled Argentina in the late 1970s, and so was untouchable. Campanella’s film concerned a couple of investigators reunited after many years to reopen a case in which a young woman was brutally murdered. The major problem with this “Secret” is that it’s been transformed from a haunting tale of a country struggling to come to terms with its dark past into a dully conventional FBI-style thriller. The perils of doing an English remake of a film that succeeded in another language are even more evident than usual in “Secret in Their Eyes.” Juan Jose Campanella’s Argentine-Spanish original of 2009 won an Oscar as best foreign film, but Billy Ray’s retooling of it will hardly cop any awards. ![]() ![]() The additional benefit of the Pro version is that it uses the GPU for much faster rendering. If you're playing it for the first time, it's a 10 or so hour ride that's mostly fine. That said, as a game, it's not like.offensively bad or anything. It'd be very easy to argue that, until GoW2018, they have just been making better GoW2005. Everything the other games would do, it's the first that introduced the concept and they have been iterating on it. The only thing GoW1 can truly claim is that it is the origin point. Paired with the extremely simplistic combat with one weapon few enemies and not much more, I got bored of it very quickly and just wanted it to end at less than the halfway point. It's a very "show, don't tell" problem where the narrator is the one that tells us everything Kratos is thinking and feeling because otherwise he'd just be a blank slate. And the CGI acting is awful, because not only does Kratos have the same stupid expression the entire game no matter what emotion he's trying to convey, anything that's happening visually is then also explained by the narrator. It's the sort of story that only works if you don't know the spoilers, because most of it is about building for the reveal of why Kratos hates Ares and it's just not structured to be enriching if you already know that. In fact, atleast like half the story is him walking around and being reminded of something that the game then goes into flashback mode to explain. The storytelling is arguably its most unique feature in how it's mostly narrated by gaia, but that's not actually a good thing because Kratos is a very passive figure in the story. Not all of it is awful, but none of it is as good as later entries would make. The combat is at it's worst and most basic, few enemies, the qte's are outdated, it's environments pale in comparison to what we'd see in future games, etc. Having replayed the other games, everything GoW1 does has since been done better. But I was one of the few people who didn't think it was that great on release either. Having played through the entire main trilogy and now going through the side games, I can say the answer is mostly no. It sits very comfortably high up in the ranking of the series for me, the sequels got prettier and more bombastic, but there were lower lows. A modicum of patience is all that is needed and it was over pretty quick for me. That said, some argue a certain 'pillar' sequence is problematic but I really didn't find it too bad on revisit at all. I was really surprised how well that large Zelda-esque dungeon held up.
